We Should All be Feminists - A short insightful read

Updated: Jan 10, 2021

Feminist: a person who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes.

This is not going to be a book review, so if you are wondering whether to choose this book, go to the "about the book" section of the blog, in the bottom.

"he was shaking his head sadly as he spoke – was that I should never call myself a feminist, since feminists are women who are unhappy because they cannot find husbands."

More or less, every woman or man has heard absurd things while pointing out women-related issues. Feminism is one of the most misinterpreted words in our society. People often think feminism as man hatred, but this book has presented the idea of feminism.

"If we do something over and over again, it becomes normal. If we see the same thing over and over again, it becomes normal."

As a part of growing up, we've always seen our mothers doing all the household chores and our fathers to go out for a job. As adults, we expect women to do housework, take care of others, and follow orders. On the other hand, men always expected to earn more than a woman having the same qualifications.

"we must raise our daughters differently. We must also raise our sons differently."

When we talk about gender issues, everyone has different points depending on their growing up mentality or environment. It's ok for boys' to be vulnerable or to like pink. Masculinity has nothing to do with it. It is ok for a girl to put herself in front of everything. There is nothing selfish in it.

"But what matters even more is our attitude, our mindset."

I don't know how many of you have noticed, but society's expectations from men and women are different. The bill is always given to the man. At least I've seen it. Women are often expected to quit their jobs after having children. Over the years, the laws have only changed, but society is still the same.

  • "why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage, yet we don’t teach boys to do the same?"

  • "the destruction of a marriage, the possibility of not having a marriage at all – that in our society is much more likely to be used against a woman than against a man."

"Gender is not an easy conversation to have. It makes people uncomfortable, sometimes even irritable."

Not all men or women are the same. The book points out the issues which most women face. Gender is a contradictory topic to discuss. People have their perspectives depending on their experiences, and it's justified. Everyone has their struggles, and only mutual understanding and a change of mindset can make things easier.

What does “feminism” mean today? That is the question at the heart of We Should All Be Feminists, a personal, eloquently-argued essay—adapted from her much-viewed TEDx talk of the same name—by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the award-winning author of Americanah and Half of a Yellow Sun.

With humor and levity, here Adichie offers readers a unique definition of feminism for the twenty-first century—one rooted in inclusion and awareness. She shines a light not only on blatant discrimination, but also the more insidious, institutional behaviors that marginalize women around the world, in order to help readers of all walks of life better understand the often masked realities of sexual politics. Throughout, she draws extensively on her own experiences—in the U.S., in her native Nigeria, and abroad—offering an artfully nuanced explanation of why the gender divide is harmful for women and men, alike.

Argued in the same observant, witty and clever prose that has made Adichie a bestselling novelist, here is one remarkable author’s exploration of what it means to be a woman today—and an of-the-moment rallying cry for why we should all be feminists.
