Book – A Thousand Splendid Suns
Author – Khaled Hosseini
Genre – Domestic Fiction
Set against the backdrop of the war in Afghanistan between 1960 to 1990, Khaled Hosseini’s “The Thousand Splendid Suns” chronicles the plight of Afgan women.
Mariam, an illegitimate child, was forcibly married to a man in his forties after her mother’s death. Mariam’s life becomes more miserable when Rasheed marries Laila, who has lost her everything in war. Laila was hiding the disturbing truth, and Mariam held a mountain of sorrow in her heart. Soon Mariam and Laila became companions.
The author skillfully describes the horrors of war and the oppression of women in the society of that time. Khaledi’s writing style is so simple that the intensity of the story remains intact.
The story is not only about sacrifice, sorrow, terror, domestic abuse, but also about love, hope, bravery, and inspiration.
